Removal of inorganic arsenic from aqueous solution by Fe-modified ceramsite: batch studies and remediation trials

Abstract During sediment remediation, adsorbent addition is an effective technology for the removal of contaminants but cost often high. In this study, a low-cost adsorbent, ceramsite, made from contaminated riverbed was synthesized. The Fe-modified ceramsite (FMC) used as to remove arsenate aqueous solutions and reduce inorganic arsenic release sediments. Kinetic studies showed that chemisorption mainly governed adsorption process while batch yielded theoretical capacity 10.63 mg/g at pH = 7 condition. Co-existing anions have no significant impact on process. regeneration studies, 91, 86, 80% were recovered in 3 cycles. In-situ remediation trials revealed surface significantly reduced into system, with reduction efficiency 86%. Furthermore, species layer inactivated active state stable state. These findings highlight application FMC facile cost-effective containment sediments, demonstrating they are highly applicable practical cases.
